Professor Zhang Delivers Keynote on Synthetic Genomics at CERN

GSEJ Director Professor Joy Y. Zhang delivered a keynote address at the 2025 Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipation Summit at CERN, an event focused on “The Age of Possibility: Science, Sovereignty, and Shared Futures.” Her keynote, “Synthetic Genomics: Promise and Precaution,” examined the role of societal empowerment and science diplomacy in the governance of synthetic genomics, with particular attention to societal change and the need to adapt regulatory and engagement approaches for future responsible innovation.

The address drew on findings from two major research programmes led by Professor Zhang: the Wellcome Trust-funded Care-full Synthesis Project and the ARIA-supported Futuring Biological Commons initiative.

In addition to her keynote, Professor Zhang contributed to the Planetary Humanity and Eco-Augmentation workshops at the summit. Her interventions focused on developing inclusive approaches to global science governance and on operationalising trust in ecosystem-related research.

Professor Zhang’s participation at GESDA reflects the ongoing efforts of the Centre for Global Science and Epistemic Justice to advance responsible research and innovation, strengthen science diplomacy, and promote fair and globally attuned governance of emerging biotechnologies.
