We congratulate Dr Peter Boffoe on the successful completion of his PhD in Applied Health at the University of Kent.
A qualified social worker with experience across social care settings since 2016, Peter holds a BA in Sociology from the University of Ghana (Legon) and an MA in Social Work from Kent. He was awarded a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) scholarship in 2020 to pursue his doctoral studies.
Peter’s research focused on the role of Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMHPs) in the detention of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) individuals under the Mental Health Act 1983. Drawing on ethnographic research and interviews, his thesis explored how race, risk, and power intersect in decision-making, and how service users experience this process. His work contributes vital insight into persistent inequalities and calls for greater epistemic justice in mental health care.
Supervised by Dr Jo Warner and Professor Michael Calnan, Peter’s research is a significant step toward more inclusive, accountable mental health services.
We wish Dr Boffoe every success in the important work ahead.
