For me, it’s a season of warmth, gratitude, and the simple joy of being together. Last year, on the 14th December, Christmas was especially meaningful because it was the last one I spent with my beloved pet, Ammu Kutty, pictured above by the Christmas tree. Looking at this photo brings back such vivid memories of him. He wasn’t just an animal; he was family and a gentle presence who made even ordinary days brighter. Sitting by the Christmas tree, watching his curious eyes and gentle spirit, felt like having a little extra light in the room. Seeing Ammu Kutty here brings back the joy he added to our holidays and how he would sit so proudly as if he was part of the decorations. He may not be here anymore, but his memory will always be a part of my Christmas.

Losing him has been hard, and Christmas won’t feel the same without him there. But I’m grateful for the joy he brought into my life and all the memories we made. I think that’s what Christmas is really about: cherishing the love we share, whether it’s with people, pets, or anyone who brings a little bit of magic into our lives.

This year, I’ll make time to remember him, maybe lighting a little candle by the tree in his honour. In his memory, I might also make a batch of the treats I used to make for him, and share them with friends’ pets, spreading a bit of that Christmas joy he used to bring into my life. I loved seeing him enjoy these treats—just a small way of including him in our celebrations. You can make them too, using the recipe below- because pets deserve festive snacks too! 😁

Holiday Pet Treat Recipe in Memory of Ammu Kutty

Here’s the recipe that I used to make for him, one that brings back happy memories:

Mix 1 cup of oats, 1 mashed banana, and a bit of peanut butter.

Shape into small balls or shapes, and bake at 325°F (160°C) for about 10-15 minutes, until firm.

When I think back to Christmas traditions, it’s the simple things that stand out like decorating the tree, listening to holiday music, and baking treats (including special ones for him)! In our family, Christmas isn’t about big gifts or fancy celebrations. It’s just about being together, sharing stories, Gospel, laughing, and Thanksgiving to God for giving us the best of heaven.

“The true meaning of Christmas is that God gave us the best of heaven—His Son, Jesus as a gift of love, hope, and redemption for the world. Through Him, we find light in our darkness, peace in our hearts, and the promise of eternal joy.” #truelove

This Christmas, I’ll also play some of my favourite Christmas songs, the ones that make me feel at home away from home and bring back those warm feelings, such as Nat King Cole – “The Christmas Song”. For me, that song captures the peaceful side of Christmas, like a cosy moment wrapped in warmth and love.

Christmas has always been about the people and pets who make life feel full.
