12 new CELTA trainees (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) started their course with us on 18 Jun 2018 and are hoping to qualify as English language teachers by the end of the intensive course on 19 Jul.
CELTA is one of the most globally recognised qualifications for teaching English to speakers of other languages, which means our trainees can apply for teaching posts either overseas or in the UK as soon as they are qualified. In fact, all 12 of last year’s trainees were offered jobs at the end of their training with us. CELTA is regarded by employers as providing sound initial training and a strong basis from which to develop as a teacher of English, and is a great way to develop both intercultural and employability skills and helping Kent graduates make an impact both at home and abroad.
A real bonus of running a CELTA course is that it is also an opportunity to offer free English language classes to members of the community who often would not have access to these classes.
For our Spring edition of Voicebox we caught up with Rebecca Coleman, our CELTA Main Course Tutor, to discuss how CELTA has evolved over the years. Some of that article is included below.
Since 2012 CEWL has run eight highly successful Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) courses. In 2017, for the first time, we took on a full cohort of 12 candidates for a 5 week full–time course at the University of Kent.
CELTA is an excellent way of enhancing your employability, and if you are thinking of working locally or travelling over the summer, or taking a gap year after university, CELTA is a great way to earn some cash while you are away. You may even find that if you enjoy language teaching, you decide you make it your career and even go on to take the Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults (DELTA), or a Post Graduate Diploma and/or Masters in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). CELTA also opens doors for teaching/tutoring 1 to 1, business English or exam English.
Having successfully gained the CELTA qualification at the University of Kent, many of our trainees have immediately found posts in local language schools:

- English in Action – Canterbury
- Chaucer College – Canterbury
- St Peters Language School – Canterbury
- Language UK – Broadstairs
- Churchill House – Ramsgate
- Kingswood – Ashford
Many have gone overseas:
- Spain
- Italy
- Japan
- Vietnam
- China
- Saudi Arabia
- Greece
- Holland
Several have completed or are completing further qualifications in the field:
- Masters in Applied Linguistics for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) here at the University of Kent or Masters in Applied Linguistics in Holland.
