The listing below aims to detail organisations that have a diversity agenda and are committed to helping university students\u00a0 who are BAME, LGBT+, disabled\/with long term health issues or seeking social mobility to access legal* careers. (Please note, <\/em><em>we have not listed organisations which work with school age students so, there may be things you think are missing such as Prime but this is deliberate.)<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Whilst the organisations listed here all offer wonderful support you must be proactive in seeking out the opportunities available, put yourself forward and maintain contact. If you do this, the organisations will help to make your career journey into law easier but they will not be able to do all the chasing &#8211; you need to engage!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The list is compiled of organisations known to us that help students into legal careers. It is not a comprehensive list. Additionally, some organisations help with wider careers (usually in the city of London). The course is <strong>free<\/strong> and is over a number of weeks.\u00a0 \u00a0These are the programmes on offer: Black Heritage \/ Asian and Minority Ethnic Heritage \/ LGBTQ+ \/ Social mobility \/ Disabled.\u00a0 Each programme has different speakers from a range of legal backgrounds. Aspiring solicitors work with over 26 law firms and legal teams to provide events, mentoring, competitions, employability assistance and access to the legal profession. In the past students have been offered training contracts and vacation schemes through the help of Aspiring solicitors. They will support you in all areas that this directory covers.\u00a0 AS organises an annual commercial awareness competition, work experience opportunities, workshops, mentoring and scholarships.\u00a0 \u00a0To find out more, please see the website where you are also able to sign up for their free monthly e-newsletter detailing the opportunities available.<br \/>\n<a style=\"color: #2a6496\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aspiringsolicitors.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.aspiringsolicitors.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<p><u>Aspiring Solicitors offers a Diversity Directory<\/u> \u2013 this is a fantastic opportunity for students to speak to a trainee, associate, senior associate, paralegal, or partner and ask any questions they may have about their career path, firm or generally developing a connection with someone in the legal profession. AS members should go to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspiringsolicitors.co.uk\/professional-ambassadors\/\">https:\/\/www.aspiringsolicitors.co.uk\/professional-ambassadors\/<\/a>\u00a0where they can search for someone based on the diversity strand or by law firm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Black Solicitor&#8217;s Network<br \/>\n<\/strong>This is the primary representative body in England and Wales for black solicitors; its focus is the equality of access, retention and promotion of black solicitors. There is a student mentoring and training sub-committee which seeks to help student members develop their legal careers. BSN has developed and regularly hosts, in conjunction with leading firms (BBC, Jones Day, Hogan Lovells), interactive Career Workshops for undergraduate and graduate BSN members which provide insights into the recruitment process and tailored advice on applying for training contracts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blacksolicitorsnetwork.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.blacksolicitorsnetwork.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>BME Legal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>BME Legal is a committee made up of law students and pupil barristers, advisers and ambassadors who are all practising barristers and partner chambers who sponsor our events.\u00a0 The aim of the group is to increase diversity at the Bar. \u00a0 They offer two programmes: Intensive Support Programme (a series of professional workshops focused on pupillage applications, mock interviews and other key areas of professional development and mentoring); and a Scholarship Success Programme (for those who have an upcoming scholarship interview at one of the four Inns of Court). Additionally, BME Legal are always on the lookout for ambitious, driven and capable law students to join the committee and develop their leadership and communication skills, among others. Their aim is to make the City a fairer, more human place for people with disabilities to pursue a career.<br \/>\nAll of the mentors either have disabilities or medical conditions, or support colleagues who have them. They include lawyers, bankers, accountants, PAs, civil servants, consultants and more. They will mentor all types of disability, relating to both physical and mental health. They also work with employers to improve disability awareness.<br \/>\nThe mentoring scheme for entrants to the City will support you through the process of job applications, interviews and beyond.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/citydisabilities.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/citydisabilities.org.uk\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>City Solicitors Horizons<\/strong><br \/>\nCSH is an initiative to improve access to the legal profession for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. It is a programme within SEO London organisation. Each intake will benefit from a 3 \u2013year programme of comprehensive classroom and one-to-one training sessions, mentoring from lawyers, and work experience from sponsoring firms. There are eligibility conditions to fulfil (relating to state-education\/commitment to the legal profession and potential).<br \/>\nApplications open in September each year. Check website for closing date.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.citysolicitorshorizons.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/www.citysolicitorshorizons.org\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>DiversCity in Law<\/strong><br \/>\nDiversCity is a unique recruitment event aimed at raising awareness of pursuing a legal career in the City amongst lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students at degree and postgraduate level. With the slogan \u2018Now you are out, let us help you get in\u2019 the DiversCity initiative aims to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\uf0d8 Provide a forum to showcase the experiences of successful LGBT lawyers and dispel any misconceptions young LGBT aspiring lawyers may have;<\/li>\n<li>\uf0d8 Allow students to speak first-hand to LGBT lawyers;<\/li>\n<li>\uf0d8 Attract LGBT candidates into the law profession;<\/li>\n<li>\uf0d8 Provide an opportunity for students to build their own personal networks;<\/li>\n<li>\uf0d8 Build a pipeline of diverse talent for the participating law firms and;<\/li>\n<li>\uf0d8 Ensure the law profession continues to strengthen as an LGBT friendly environment.<\/li>\n<li>\uf0d8 They also have a mentoring scheme<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/diverscityinlaw.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/diverscityinlaw.net\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>EmployAbility<\/strong><br \/>\nis dedicated to assisting students and graduates with all disabilities, including dyslexia or long term health conditions, into employment. They run an ever-expanding range of programmes for large international and UK employers, including internships and graduate recruitment, as well as offering training, events and consultancy around disability awareness and inclusion. Their client list includes many leading blue-chip as well as public sector organisations, and they match talented students to these disability inclusive employers.<br \/>\nThis is not a law-careers specific organisation &#8211; they will help with all career areas.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.employ-ability.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.employ-ability.org.uk\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Freshfields Stephen Lawrence Scholarship Scheme<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2026 is designed to address under-representation in large commercial law firms and other City institutions of black men from less privileged backgrounds. The scheme is aimed at first year law students and awards a substantial scholarship (\u00a33.5k), mentoring, personal development and work experience.<br \/>\nApplications must be made by a member of KLS staff so, if you are interested in being nominated please speak with you tutor. Applications are made between Jan-March each year. There is an insight day at Freshfields in February for anyone considering attending.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freshfields.com\/en-gb\/about-us\/responsible-business\/freshfields_stephen_lawrence_scholarship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.freshfields.com\/en-gb\/about-us\/responsible-business\/freshfields_stephen_lawrence_scholarship\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Government Diversity Summer Scheme<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Diversity Summer Scheme is a 1 week summer vacation placement (normally takes place during the first week of July) for undergraduates or graduates from diverse backgrounds which are currently under-represented across the legal profession.\u00a0 \u00a0The Diversity Summer Scheme works in partnership with <a class=\"govuk-link\" style=\"background-color: #ffffff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspiringsolicitors.co.uk\/\" rel=\"external\">Aspiring Solicitors,\u00a0<\/a><a class=\"govuk-link\" style=\"background-color: #ffffff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lawsociety.org.uk\/campaigns\/diversity-access-scheme\/\" rel=\"external\">Law Society Diversity Access Scheme <\/a>and the <a class=\"govuk-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.socialmobility.org.uk\/\" rel=\"external\">Social Mobility Foundation\u00a0 \u00a0<\/a>You will need to apply via one of these mentioned schemes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Guru Nanak social mobility scholarship<\/strong><br \/>\nThe recipient of this scholarship will receive mentoring and a \u00a34000 prize in a Bar scholarship. There is also help with pupillage applications and possible work experience or financial awards.\u00a0 The aims of the scholarship is to improve access to the legal profession for financially and socially disadvantaged individuals, and to promote discourse on Sikh jurisprudence. The Bar scholarship is open to any individual who has the potential to become a barrister, can demonstrate strong commitment to the Bar, and is from a socially or financially disadvantaged background.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/singhbarrister.co.uk\/current-bar-scholarships\">https:\/\/singhbarrister.co.uk\/current-bar-scholarships\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Herbert Smith Freehills Roger Leyland Memorial Scholarship<br \/>\n<\/strong>This scholarship helps with funding and work experience in law.\u00a0 There is a \u00a39k financial award; mentors; summer vacation scheme; study sessions; events.\u00a0 You must be in 1st year (if on a 3 year course) or 2nd year (if on a 4 year course).\u00a0 Applications open in November and close in January.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/careers.herbertsmithfreehills.com\/global\/en\/uk\/early-careers\/apply\">https:\/\/careers.herbertsmithfreehills.com\/global\/en\/uk\/early-careers\/apply<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Inns of Court BPTC scholarships<\/strong><br \/>\nThere are several scholarships provided by the different Inns of Courts. The majority of scholarships are offered on a merit basis, but there are diversity focused awards and bursaries awarded on the basis of financial need too. It is for all personnel in the legal sector (for both lawyers and non-lawyers).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">\u2022 The InterLaw Diversity Forum holds monthly panel-discussion meetings for both the LGBT+ Network, and Race and Ethnicity (BAME) Network. They also hold a Disability Network, ENABLE<br \/>\n\u2022 InterLawConnect is their online mentoring programme<br \/>\n\u2022 The InterLaw Diversity Forum Student Lab connects high-potential diverse students across the UK with their peers, law firms, corporate, institutions, and barrister chambers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.interlawdiversityforum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.interlawdiversityforum.org\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Kalisher Trust<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Kalisher Trust offers placements, scholarships and intern opportunities designed to encourage students who are intending to, or already practising at the Criminal Bar. All applicants must demonstrate \u201cexceptional promise but modest means\u201d and will be judged against the Trust\u2019s criteria for awards.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thekalishertrust.org\/who-we-help\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.thekalishertrust.org\/who-we-help<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>KLS Professional Mentoring Scheme<\/strong><br \/>\nThis scheme aims to help students to make career choices, understand the legal working world or to navigate the application process for both work and study. The scheme consists of a network of 100+ mentors in 7 countries, drawn from both KLS alumni and Kent-based lawyers.<br \/>\nThe mentoring relationships run from the beginning of the summer holiday until the end of the Spring term. A networking event also takes place annually in London. Many students have reported that their mentor has offered exceptional advice, introduced them to a wider network of professionals, assisted with applications and, in a few cases, offered \/ arranged work experience.<br \/>\nApplications open in Spring term. They do this by holding events to give students from low socio-economic backgrounds the opportunity to meet leading legal professionals and gain insights into the legal world.
