{"id":1609,"date":"2021-09-03T09:47:53","date_gmt":"2021-09-03T08:47:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/klsemployability\/?page_id=1609"},"modified":"2022-09-26T12:39:04","modified_gmt":"2022-09-26T11:39:04","slug":"mini-pupillage","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/getintolaw\/how-to-2\/becoming-a-barrister\/mini-pupillage\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8211;   Mini-pupillage"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>What is a mini-pupillage?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>In short, it&#8217;s\u00a0work experience\u00a0in a set of chambers.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Normally you will\u00a0shadow a barrister so that you can see the nature of his\/her work.\u00a0 This shadowing will, hopefully, involve attending court (although note, in some areas of law barristers are more involved with written advice and attend court very infrequently).\u00a0 You may also get to sit in on a meeting with a client or a case conference.\u00a0 If you are in Chambers for any part of the Mini-Pupillages (MPs) expect to be set a research task or asked to familiarise yourself with a case file.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff\">What is an &#8216;assessed Mini-pupillage?<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Some chambers offer Assessed mini-pupillages which will require you to undertake some kind of\u00a0task (usually research)\u00a0and present you findings\u00a0by way of a written document and\/or a presentation.\u00a0 This &#8216;Assessment&#8217; is used as part of the recruitment process for pupillage much like solicitors use the Vacation Scheme.\u00a0 They are essentially testing you to see if you have the right skills and approach for their Chambers.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of MPs are not assessed and\u00a0form no part of their selection process.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>How long does a mini-pupillage last?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Most\u00a0MPs will last for 1 day, 3 days or 5 days.\u00a0 It is highly unusual for them to last more than 1 week although KLS has one QC offering 3 x 2 week MPs.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff\">Why do a mini-pupillage?<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Firstly, it gives you the opportunity to road test the job.\u00a0 Could you really see yourself doing this type of work and, importantly, would the way of working suit you.\u00a0\u00a0 So, you&#8217;ll get a great insight into the career and hopefully, also some contacts which may be of use to you as you complete your legal educations and move onto finding work.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff\">How many mini-pupillages are required?<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>There is no compulsory requirement that you do x number of MPs but&#8230;you will not be taken seriously as an aspiring barrister if you have not given time to this important career activity.\u00a0\u00a0 You must do at least one MP but I would advise that you aim for at least 3.\u00a0\u00a0 Some students like to &#8216;collect&#8217; MPs but be aware that too many on a CV can be viewed negatively &#8211; the reader may think that you do not know what area of law interests you!\u00a0\u00a0 I would advise that if you have more than 6 you should seek advice about whether to include them all.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff\">How to find a mini-pupillage<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>As always, there are multiple ways of finding an MP:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Chambers Student&#8221; has a useful on-line list of all the chambers openly offering MPs.\u00a0 see &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chambersstudent.co.uk\/the-bar\/mini-pupillage-vacancies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> https:\/\/www.chambersstudent.co.uk\/the-bar\/mini-pupillage-vacancies<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The Training Contract and Pupillages Handbook also lists the chambers openly offering MPs.\u00a0\u00a0 You can pick up this book for free in the Law Reception or at the Careers &amp; Employability Service.<\/li>\n<li>Some Chambers do not include themselves on the above listings and will, instead (if they offer MPs &#8211; and some don&#8217;t!) details the MPs on their own websites.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, sometimes it is a case of who you know!\u00a0 This is where your network comes into play (so take advantage of all the networking opportunities you can). Many barristers will individually offer you a mini-pupillage even where it is Chambers&#8217; decision not to provide MPs.\u00a0\u00a0 So, when you meet with a barrister &#8211; ask!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff\">When to apply<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">There are some Chambers who will not consider you until you are a BPTC student but most will consider you at any stage.\u00a0\u00a0 Some prefer you to have studied law for one or two years first but there are many available to first years.\u00a0\u00a0 However, I would advise that you do not apply for an <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">assessed mini-pupillage until you feel confident in your research abilities as you will have a tough legal problem to answer.\u00a0\u00a0 For many this will be Stage 3 of the degree or even BPTC year.\u00a0 The Assessed MPs are really part of the recruitment process so you do need to be (almost) Pupil-ready!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>Succeeding in your application for mini-pupillage <\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>First things first&#8230;.MPs are not easy to get!\u00a0\u00a0The competition is fierce and\u00a0 you will need to compete at the highest level.\u00a0\u00a0 So you will need to have an impressive CV and a great covering letter which demonstrates your motivation for a career at the Bar and why you have selected that particular Chambers to apply to.\u00a0\u00a0 NB: Normally you will be required to apply by CV and\u00a0covering letter but some chambers&#8217; do have application forms.<\/p>\n<p>An &#8216;impressive&#8217; CV must have no spelling or grammatical errors!\u00a0 It is not essential that\u00a0you have previous MPs on it but there needs to be activities\/experiences\u00a0which show that you are a well-rounded person (i.e. you&#8217;ve done things other than just going to school and university) and\u00a0that you have relevant skills and qualities\u00a0for this career.\u00a0\u00a0 Things that make a CV for the Bar great include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>debating, mooting or\u00a0other public speaking (this is a &#8216;must&#8217;)<\/li>\n<li>achievements and\/or awards (particularly academic ones or ones that demonstrate lots of commitment)<\/li>\n<li>an excellent and consistent academic record<\/li>\n<li>proof that you are a &#8216;doer&#8217; see the &#8220;How to&#8221; tab and select &#8220;write a CV&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>Financing a mini-pupillage<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Mini-pupillages are not normally funded.\u00a0 Some Chambers may give you a bursary towards the cost of travel.<\/p>\n<p>However, the following funding streams which may be of interest (all have criteria that must be met):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lincoln&#8217;s Inn Mini-Pupillage Grant Scheme (available for any MP) &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lincolnsinn.org.uk\/becoming-a-barrister\/funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.lincolnsinn.org.uk\/becoming-a-barrister\/funding\/\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li>University of Kent Work and Opportunities Fund &#8211; claim up to \u00a3200 &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/ces\/funding.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/ces\/funding.html\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s also worth knowing about the following two schemes which include a paid Mini-Pupillage:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Inner Temple PASS Scheme &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.innertemple.org.uk\/becoming-a-barrister\/how-to-get-involved\/pass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> https:\/\/www.innertemple.org.uk\/becoming-a-barrister\/how-to-get-involved\/pass\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Middle Temple, Access to the Bar Award (the LSSJ Employability team will invite you to ask them to nominate you for this award in Spring term (keep looking at the newsletters) &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middletemple.org.uk\/becoming-barrister\/access-bar-award\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.middletemple.org.uk\/becoming-barrister\/access-bar-award<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>During the mini-pupillage<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure you have a dark outfit for court.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure that you have money as you may have to travel to court.\u00a0 Train fares can be quite pricey but the barrister you are shadowing will not normally pay (although some Chambers may pay you an award torwards travel &#8211; this varies from \u00a310 per day to \u00a3250 per week).\u00a0\u00a0 You will also need money for lunch (if you are lucky enough to get time!)<\/li>\n<li>Ask the barrister how they would like you to address them &#8211; formally or informally.\u00a0 If you find this an awkward question, the first time you meet address them formally i.e. Good Morning Mr\/Ms&#8230;.. thank you so much for allowing me to shadow you&#8221;.\u00a0 It is likely, at this point, that you will be invited to call them by their first name.\u00a0 If not, stick with the formal address!<\/li>\n<li>Ask them whether they will welcome questions or if they prefer you to remain quiet and wait for instructions (it is normal to ask lots of questions).<\/li>\n<li>Be alert and look interested!\u00a0 If you look bored, tired, fed up etc. what motivation will there be for the barrister to want to engage with you?<\/li>\n<li>In court &#8211; have pen and paper to hand and make notes.\u00a0 Unless you have been asked to make notes about the case for the barrister the notes don&#8217;t need to be about the case although you should note the names of the case, the Judge and the counsel (on both sides) as this is a favourite question in pupillage applications.\u00a0 Notes may be\u00a0about the advocacy skills employed by the barristers (successful and unsuccessful tactics);
