Exhibition

“The Genius Of Language”

Why is human language so special and how does it differ from the communication systems of other animals?  How did language evolve in the human species? Why do we not all speak the same language? How many languages are there in the world and why is it worth preserving them? How do we learn our mother tongue and why does this process differ from learning new languages later on in life? What is the creative potential of language?

Discover the answers to these questions at an interactive exhibition with maps, videos, quizzes, and fun activities. Language experts from English Language and Linguistics will be present at the venue, in order to explain and discuss the various exhibits. Special exhibits and activities will be available for younger visitors.

A free creative writing workshop will also be run on site. This workshop, entitled “Language and Creativity”, will have a special focus on figures of speech such as metaphors, exploring how they work, what makes a good metaphor and how to use them effectively.

When? Sunday, November 16th, 2014. Opening hours: 11 am – 5:00 pm

The “Language and Creativity” workshop will take place in the afternoon: 3:00-4:00 pm. The event is free but places are limited, so please register in advance.
