As Mark Kermode <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2017\/apr\/16\/the-handmaiden-park-chan-wook-review-sarah-waters-fingersmith\">comments on the film<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There are giddy pleasures to be found in this rip-roaringly ripe erotic thriller\/melodrama from <em>Oldboy<\/em>\u00a0director Park Chan-wook.\u00a0Inspired by Sarah Waters\u2019s 2002 novel\u00a0<em>Fingersmith<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Handmaiden<\/em>\u00a0is a playfully provocative tale of seduction, desire and deceit. Slyly undermining stereotypes of fall guys and femmes fatales (this is more\u00a0<em>Bound<\/em>\u00a0than\u00a0<em>Basic Instinct<\/em>), Park\u2019s film takes great delight in wrong-footing its audience, peeling away layers of mesmerising misdirection with delicious cinematic sleight of hand.
