{"id":986,"date":"2017-06-01T11:42:59","date_gmt":"2017-06-01T10:42:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/finance-news\/?p=986"},"modified":"2017-06-01T11:42:59","modified_gmt":"2017-06-01T10:42:59","slug":"beware-predatory-or-bogus-conferences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/finance-news\/2017\/06\/01\/beware-predatory-or-bogus-conferences\/","title":{"rendered":"Beware Predatory or Bogus Conferences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There have been a number of instances where staff at the University have been approached to attend, at &#8211;\u00a0small\u00a0or\u00a0no cost &#8211;\u00a0various conferences and events that are misleading or not as legitimate as they may appear.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes these look too good to be true &#8211; and they frequently are.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Please check and be absolutely certain before you commit to attending anything that may seem suspicious to you. It is a profitable, ruthless\u00a0and large\u00a0industry that exploits our sector.<\/p>\n<p>There are a number of characteristics to look out for, including :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Confusing or similarly named events to well known Industry Leaders<\/li>\n<li>Free or Low Cost\u00a0Attendance which you might expect to come at a\u00a0cost if legitimate<\/li>\n<li>Confusing Small Print which is difficult to find or non-existent<\/li>\n<li>Pressurised Sales\u00a0techniques\u00a0such as frequent calls, emails, or similar<\/li>\n<li>Offers to register you on your behalf<\/li>\n<li>Lack of appropriate Peer review for papers you may submit (I.e. fast tracked review)<\/li>\n<li>Invitations that appear to have no relevance to your specialism and expertise<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Beware also, of instances where you may be unwittingly agreeing to a number of &#8220;client meetings.&#8221; Your presence\u00a0is\u00a0effectively bait being sold as sales opportunities to companies. In one instance, a member of staff at Kent was offered free of charge a 4 day conference on\u00a0a\u00a0cruise ship, but could effectively be held hostage to endless (and no doubt boring)\u00a0sales meetings.<\/p>\n<p>If you sign up for one of these, the companies may seek to charge us enormous cancellation fees of up to several thousand pounds.
