On Thursday 6th July  in the afternoon, Sarah Vickerstaff, Chris Phillipson and David Lain will be presenting some of the findings from our project in a talk entitled “The management of older workers: what has changed?” as part of the annual British Gerontological Society Symposium – this year to be held in Swansea.

Release of Overcoming Inequalities conference report

The full conference report from our recent Overcoming Inequalities event at Church House in conjunction with the Research into Extending Working Lives (renEWL) consortium and ILC-UK has been released and can be downloaded free of charge at

Sarah Vickerstaff takes part in CAWG symposium at Canterbury Christ Church university

On Saturday 13 May Sarah Vickerstaff gave a presentation entitled “A new age of retirement?” to the Canterbury & District Association of the British Federation of Women Graduates.  The event – Positive Aspects of Ageing: Challenging stereotypes – was chaired by the Dean of the Faculty of Health & Wellbeing at CCCU, Debra Teasdale, and featured a number of academics from the University of Kent, including Dr Hannah Swift, Research Fellow at the School of Psychology and Professor Julia Twigg, Professor of Social Policy and Sociology. The event was well received by an audience in excess of 70 people.

Overcoming inequalities event a great success

We were delighted to join with colleagues from UCL’s renEWL project and ILC-UK to host an event at Church House to discuss the many issues arising from extending working lives and the changes in state pension age. We were joined by colleagues from interested organisations, charities, academia and government departments and were particularly pleased to hear directly from John Cridland on the results of his pensions review.

Wendy Loretto speaks at Healthy Working Lives event

Wendy was the keynote speaker at an NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde/Healthy Working Lives event ‘Supporting Older Workers Seminar’ on 23rd February, held in Glasgow.  It was attended by more than 100 stakeholders representing public, private and  third sector employing organisations from across Scotland. They keynote featured initial findings from the Uncertain Futures case study research.

Overcoming Inequalities: Addressing barriers to extending working lives | 5 April 2017

Socio-economic inequalities continue to present challenges to the Government’s Fuller Working Lives programme, with many people forced out of work through a combination of redundancy, ill health or early retirement.

This one day conference for policy makers, hosted by the ILC-UK, will showcase new research findings from the Uncertain Futures research consortium led by Professor Sarah Vickerstaff, University of Kent and the renEWL research consortium led by Professor Jenny Head at UCL. The conference will examine the current barriers to extending working lives: health inequalities, work place practice, and the policy barriers that Government, business and civil society can work collectively to address.
