{"id":333,"date":"2018-06-27T13:17:57","date_gmt":"2018-06-27T13:17:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/estates-news\/?p=333"},"modified":"2018-06-27T13:17:57","modified_gmt":"2018-06-27T13:17:57","slug":"sibson-building-is-one-of-uks-best-new-buildings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/estates-news\/2018\/06\/27\/sibson-building-is-one-of-uks-best-new-buildings\/","title":{"rendered":"Sibson Building is one of UK\u2019s best new buildings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Sibson Building at the University has been recognised as one of the nation\u2019s best new buildings by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.architecture.com\/awards-and-competitions-landing-page\/awards\/riba-national-awards\">RIBA\u2019s National Awards<\/a> are given to buildings across the UK that are <strong>recognised as making \u2018significant contributions\u2019 to architecture<\/strong> and it follows success in the RIBA regional awards when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/kbs\/facilities\/\">Sibson Building<\/a>\u00a0was named South-East Building of the Year for 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The building, at the Canterbury campus, was designed by architect <a href=\"http:\/\/www.penoyreprasad.com\/\">Penoyre and Prasad<\/a> and <strong>officially opened in May 2017<\/strong>. It is home to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/kbs\/\">Kent Business School<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/smsas\/\">School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science<\/a> and is named after the late <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/campusonline\/?view=9732\">Professor Robin Sibson<\/a>, a former vice-chancellor of the University.<\/p>\n<p>Described by RIBA as <strong>\u2018a very thoughtful building, with a clear architectural concept which has been rigorous enough to withstand the project development and budgetary constraints\u2019,<\/strong> the design concept features zigzagging wings which help to integrate the two schools while allowing them to have their own dedicated spaces.<\/p>\n<p>The RIBA description continues: \u2018It was evident that the <strong>relationship between the design team and contractor was good, with shared aspirations helped by good communication of design intent<\/strong>. Likewise, there seemed to be a strong sense of trust and respect between client and architect and when we met them the architect\u2019s passion and enthusiasm was infectious.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The Sibson Building will now be among <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architecture.com\/knowledge-and-resources\/knowledge-landing-page\/uks-best-new-buildings-2018-riba-national-awards-announced\">49 national winners<\/a> to be considered for the shortlist \u2013 announced on 19 July \u2013 for the coveted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architecture.com\/awards-and-competitions-landing-page\/awards\/riba-stirling-prize\">RIBA Stirling Prize<\/a>, which is a<strong>warded annually for the best building in the UK<\/strong>.
