This means integrating it into education, research, and operations.<\/p>\n<p>Our laboratories play a key role in this, as places of innovation and discovery and at Kent we have numerous facilities that allow research to thrive. However, laboratory activity consumes around 5-10 times more energy per square meter than typical academic spaces. There\u2019s a real need \u2013\u202fand opportunity \u2013\u202fto tackle this and reduce the negative environmental effects of laboratories on campus and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"h2-lg heading-underline\">The Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework<\/h3>\n<div class=\"cms\">\n<p>We are trialling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/sustainable\/leaf\/resources-and-materials\">LEAF (The Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework)<\/a>,\u00a0 a tool developed by University College London (UCL) to help researchers, staff and students understand and improve the sustainability and efficiency of their laboratories.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2020 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sustainability.leeds.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/106\/2021\/10\/FBGd7wHVQAQkJPx-250x250.png\" alt=\"LEAF logo\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" \/><\/p>\n<p>LEAF contains criteria\u00a0that\u00a0lab users can implement around areas such as<strong>\u00a0waste &amp; recycling, equipment management, procurement, and more.<\/strong>\u00a0The criteria are based on actions that have already been proven to work in other laboratories. A key feature of LEAF is that it allows you to quantify your\u00a0impact in both\u00a0financial\u00a0and carbon savings.<\/p>\n<p>LEAF is intended for anyone working in any of our labs. It is ideal for technical staff, lab management, PhDs and post-docs with an interest in sustainability, or anyone working around laboratories.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the University of Kent, we are committed to embedding sustainability across the whole institution.
