{"id":461,"date":"2018-06-04T09:35:40","date_gmt":"2018-06-04T09:35:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/englishresearch\/?p=461"},"modified":"2018-06-04T09:35:40","modified_gmt":"2018-06-04T09:35:40","slug":"four-million-euros-funding-for-migration-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/englishresearch\/2018\/06\/04\/four-million-euros-funding-for-migration-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Four million euros funding for migration project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">Kent is part of a five-university consortium to have been awarded almost four million euros from the European Commission for a project that aims to provide an historical, cultural and social understanding of the roots of migration.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>\u20ac3.9 million grant<\/strong>\u00a0was awarded under the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/programmes\/horizon2020\/\">Horizon 2020<\/a>\u00a0(H2020) Marie Sk\u0142odowska-Curie\u00a0Actions European Joint Doctorates scheme.<\/p>\n<p>The University\u2019s\u00a0project partners are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fu-berlin.de\/en\/index.html\">Freie Universit\u00e4t Berlin<\/a>, Prague\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cuni.cz\/\">Univerzita Karlova<\/a>\u00a0(Charles University),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.univ-montp3.fr\/\">Universit\u00e9 Paul Val\u00e9ry Montpellier 3<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sigarra.up.pt\/up\/pt\/web_base.gera_pagina?p_pagina=home\">Universidade do Porto<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kent\u2019s contribution is led by\u00a0<strong>Bernhard Klein,\u00a0<\/strong>Professor of English Literature<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>in\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/english\/\">School of English<\/a>\u00a0and Academic Director for European Development, and\u00a0<strong>Dr Amanda Klekowski von Koppenfels<\/strong>, Senior Lecturer in Migration and Politics, and Academic Director of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/brussels\/\">Brussels School of International Studies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Starting on 1 March 2019, the four-year project, entitled \u2018<strong>Migration and Modernity: Historical and Cultural Challenges<\/strong>\u2019, will undertake a comparative study to provide an\u00a0<strong>urgently needed<\/strong>\u00a0historical analysis that can address the so-called migration crisis of the present through an understanding of the population movements of the past. It will also seek to place<strong>\u00a0contemporary migration in an historical context<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The consortium has been set up as an\u00a0<strong>interdisciplinary collaboration<\/strong>\u00a0between researchers in the Humanities and the Social Sciences who will approach migration as both<strong>\u00a0a condition of modernity\u00a0<\/strong>and one of its<strong>\u00a0greatest challenges<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Through an innovative training programme, carried out in conjunction with\u00a0<strong>18 non-academic partners<\/strong>\u00a0(including NGOs, charities, and the cultural and creative industries), the project will enable a new generation of experts to gain the\u00a0<strong>historical knowledge\u00a0<\/strong>required to respond to future migration crises with<strong>\u00a0innovative solutions<\/strong>.
