{"id":228,"date":"2014-06-06T11:53:54","date_gmt":"2014-06-06T11:53:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/englishresearch\/?p=228"},"modified":"2014-06-06T12:08:03","modified_gmt":"2014-06-06T12:08:03","slug":"book-launch-celebrates-new-poetry-collection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/englishresearch\/2014\/06\/06\/book-launch-celebrates-new-poetry-collection\/","title":{"rendered":"Book launch celebrates new poetry collection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On 20 May the School of English hosted a book launch to celebrate the publication of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/english\/staff\/gaffield.html\">Nancy Gaffield&#8217;s\u00a0<\/a>most recent collection of poetry\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shearsman.com\/ws-shop\/category\/1238-gaffield-nancy\/product\/4639-nancy-gaffield---continental-drift\"><i>Continental Drift<\/i><\/a><i>.\u00a0<\/i>Attended by friends, family and colleagues from across the university, the celebration featured an introduction from friend and colleague Patricia Debney and a reading of several of the poems from the collection.<\/p>\n<p>The collection (published by Shearsman Books) is about place and about the attachments and appropriations that shape our relationship with the land.\u00a0<i>Continental Drift<\/i>\u00a0is Nancy Gaffield&#8217;s second collection.<i>\u00a0Tokaido Road<\/i>, published in 2011, won the Aldeburgh First Collection Prize.<\/p>\n<p>Nancy has recently worked with composer Nicola LeFanu to adapt the Tokaido Road poems into a libretto, which is now\u00a0a multi-media chamber opera. Created and commissioned by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/okeanos.co.uk\/\">Okeanos<\/a>, this 50-minute work, composed by Nicola LeFanu with a libretto by Nancy Gaffield, is set in the rich, hedonistic \u2018Floating World\u2019 of Japan\u2019s Edo period.
