Tuesday, 14 May 2013 to Friday, 31 May 2013
Kent’s Centre for Gender, Sexuality and Writing, in partnership with the International Centre for Victorian Women Writers (Canterbury Christ Church), has organised an exhibition exploring the portrayal of women on the Victorian stage. The exhibition showcases the diversity of women in nineteenth-century theatre with particular emphasis upon such actresses/writers as Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Fanny Kemble, Lillie Langtry, Elizabeth Robins and Elizabeth Terry. The content consists of diaries, letters, receipts, playbills, pictures, cartoons and costumes of the period. Topics include sexuality, politics, theatrical families, touring companies, Shakespearean drama, and costume and dress.
To coincide with the launch of the exhibition a public lecture will be given by Professor Kate Newey (University of Exeter) at 6pm on Tuesday, 14 May in Keynes Lecture Theatre 3. The title of Professor Newey’s lecture is ‘Suffrage as Spectacle: Guerilla Theatre’. A reception will follow at 7 pm in the Templeman Library Gallery.
The exhibition, lecture and reception are open to the public. All welcome.
