At the end of October Professor Caroline Rooney attended a workshop on ‘Preserving Egypt’s Cultural Heritage: Mitigating Threats for a Sustainable Future’. The gathering was enabled by the Newton-Mosharafa fund which promotes collaboration between Egyptian and UK experts to carry out projects of socio-economic benefit to Egypt’s future development. The 25 British and 25 Egyptian participants included Archeologists, Egyptologists, museum directors and curators and specialists in the field of cultural studies. Caroline Rooney acted as the UK lead academic in a session on community engagement. Brain-storming sessions at the workshop were accompanied by a guided tour of the Great Egyptian Museum in Giza, not yet open to the public and due to house the treasures of Tutankhamen and other antiquities in an environment best suited to their preservation, and a reception at the British Embassy to celebrate the collaborative scientific ventures underway.
