{"id":603,"date":"2013-12-11T10:07:12","date_gmt":"2013-12-11T10:07:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/?p=603"},"modified":"2017-04-20T12:50:23","modified_gmt":"2017-04-20T11:50:23","slug":"professor-donna-landrys-research-inspires-unesco-long-distance-equestrian-cultural-route-in-turkey-the-evliya-%d2%abelebi-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/2013\/12\/11\/professor-donna-landrys-research-inspires-unesco-long-distance-equestrian-cultural-route-in-turkey-the-evliya-%d2%abelebi-way\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Donna Landry\u2019s research inspires UNESCO Long-Distance Equestrian Cultural Route in Turkey, the Evliya \u04aaelebi Way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recent research by Professor Donna Landry (Professor of English Literature at the University of Kent) and other members of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/english\/evliya\/index.html\">Evliya \u04aaelebi<\/a> project team has inspired the creation of a new UNESCO Cultural Route, the Evliya \u04aaelebi Way, a riding, walking, and cycling route. For four years the project team has followed in the hoofprints of Evliya \u00c7elebi, the 17<sup>th<\/sup> century Ottoman writer, traveller and historian. In 2009 the team re-enacted on horseback a section of this great traveller&#8217;s 1671 journey to Mecca, and, in doing so, sought to re-connect Turkey with its illustrious history of equestrian traditions. The project continues to further understanding of such Ottoman legacies while promoting sustainable tourism.<\/p>\n<p>The official launch of the UNESCO Cultural Route, the Evliya \u04aaelebi Way, took place in Babasultan, near Bursa, Turkey on 11 October 2013 and was attended by the mayor of Bursa and other local dignitaries, Turkey\u2019s UNESCO Committee member Dr Mehmet Kalpakl\u0131, who cut the ribbon, the muhtar of Babasultan, Evliya team members Ercihan Dilari of the Akhal-Teke Horse Centre of Cappadocia, Dr Caroline Finkel, and Professor Gerald MacLean of the University of Exeter, and all the horses, riders, and support staff of the 2013 Evliya \u04aaelebi Great Anatolian Ride, led by Dilari.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Donna Landry commented: &#8216;The official launch of Turkey&#8217;s first UNESCO equestrian Cultural Route marks the beginning of what we hope will be a new enthusiasm for exploring the beauty of the Turkish countryside and traces of the Ottoman past on horseback.\u00a0 A warm welcome awaits you in the villages and towns along the route.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>An accompanying guidebook to the Evliya \u04aaelebi Way is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trekkinginturkey.com\/BooksAndMaps\/books.html\">now available<\/a>.
