{"id":3881,"date":"2021-08-05T12:50:19","date_gmt":"2021-08-05T11:50:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/?p=3881"},"modified":"2021-08-05T12:58:30","modified_gmt":"2021-08-05T11:58:30","slug":"guidelines-for-artificial-intelligence-from-the-18th-century","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/2021\/08\/05\/guidelines-for-artificial-intelligence-from-the-18th-century\/","title":{"rendered":"Guidelines for Artificial Intelligence from the 18th Century"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Research from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/\">University of Kent<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aalto.fi\/en\">Aalto University<\/a>, Finland, has concluded with four key guidelines for how society should view and utilise Artificial Intelligence (AI), based on fictional scenarios in 18<sup>th<\/sup> Century literature.<\/p>\n<p>The paper, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/frobt.2021.662036\/full\"><em>Embodiment in 18th Century Depictions of Human-Machine Co-Creativity<\/em><\/a>\u2019, notes that AI is viewed broadly as a tool to enhance creativity, but is actually developed to such sophistication that the AI can become co-creator to the final product.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst this is evident in modern computer software, ideas about creative AI feature in many books from the past, particularly in works of fiction, drama and poetry. The 18<sup>th<\/sup>Century was the period of the Industrial Revolution and the Enlightenment across Europe, and many advances were made in the development of \u2018automata\u2019 and other robotic systems. The literature of the time reflects this with such broadmindedness that it still highly relevant in our own AI-dominated world.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers studied examples from across the literature of the century, including Goethe\u2019s play <em>Faust<\/em>, Sterne\u2019s novel <em>Tristram Shandy<\/em>, Hoffmann\u2019s short story \u2018Automata\u2019 and Coleridge\u2019s poem \u2018The Eolian Harp\u2019. The researchers then developed four guidelines for utilising AI for the greatest opportunities of creative output. They are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Creative AIs may take strange forms .<\/strong> 18<sup>th<\/sup> Century AIs rarely resemble human beings. In <em>Tristram Shandy<\/em>, one of the main creative systems takes the form of a bowling green. In Coleridge\u2019s \u2018The Eolian Harp\u2019, the creative system is a harp made of wood and catgut. The research proposes that if scientists wish to explore new kinds of artificial creativity, they should be open-minded about the form their system takes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>An AI\u2019s creativity may come from its environment. <\/strong>The research proposes that whilst much attention is directed towards the systems of AI, more focus should be on the situations within which AI can react creatively. Using such examples as Dorothy Kilner\u2019s novel <em>Adventures of a <\/em><em>Hackney Coach<\/em>, scientists can consider how a system\u2019s environment shapes the kinds of output it can produce.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>An AI\u2019s appearances can deceive<\/strong>. A robot doesn\u2019t need to be large and strong to be powerful. The minimal physical presence of typical household AI like Siri or Alexa can conceal vast capacities stored in distant data centres. Goethe foresaw this risk in <em>Faust<\/em>. The AI character Homonculous has a small and fragile body, but actually his diminutive size enables his vast capabilities.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Let the AI take the lead. <\/strong>We often assume that only humans can act freely and independently, while computers are dull and passive. The research shows that this assumption about computers can be misleading. Often we can only appreciate the risks or potential benefits of AI if we accept that AIs are agents too, and see the situation from their perspective.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/english\/people\/2706\/falk-michael\">Dr Michael Falk, Lecturer in Eighteenth-Century Studies<\/a> at Kent\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/english\">School of English<\/a>said: \u2018This research perfectly demonstrates the essential power of creativity and the ways in which it is able to manifest itself. Here we see fictional creations of 18<sup>th<\/sup>Century literature communicate ideas and characteristics that we still can draw inspiration from in today\u2019s tech-centred society.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/computing\/people\/3051\/jordanous-anna\">Dr Anna Jordanous, Senior Lecturer<\/a> at Kent\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/computing\">School of Computing<\/a> said: \u2018Our findings not only give a set of guidelines by which to view and utilise AI, but also demonstrate that creativity can be sourced throughout a massive array of concepts and scenarios.
