{"id":3510,"date":"2021-03-11T16:16:53","date_gmt":"2021-03-11T16:16:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/?p=3510"},"modified":"2021-03-11T16:25:10","modified_gmt":"2021-03-11T16:25:10","slug":"first-year-english-literature-student-writes-piece-about-kent-alumnus-kazuo-ishiguro","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/2021\/03\/11\/first-year-english-literature-student-writes-piece-about-kent-alumnus-kazuo-ishiguro\/","title":{"rendered":"First year English literature student writes piece about Kent alumnus, Kazuo Ishiguro"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To coincide with the release of Kent alumnus, Kazuo Ishiguro&#8217;s new book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterstones.com\/book\/klara-and-the-sun\/kazuo-ishiguro\/9780571366217\"><em>Klara and the Sun<\/em><\/a>, first year BA (Hons) English Literature student, Kiera Hayles, has written an article delving into the internationally renowned novelist&#8217;s literary themes.<\/p>\n<h3>What makes us human?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>By Kiera Hayles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Best known for his Booker Prize winning and film adapted novel, <em>Remains of the Day<\/em>, my first encounter with Kazuo Ishiguro\u2019s work was recently when I read Ishiguro\u2019s <em>Never Let Me Go<\/em> as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/modules\/module\/EN341\">a module on Dystopian or \u2018Otherworldly\u2019 literature<\/a>. Reading <em>Never Let Me Go<\/em> was an overwhelming experience, but in the best way possible, and I think its settings, characters and reflections will forever stay with me. I\u2019ll be honest too, that finding out Ishiguro is an alumnus of Kent, may have made me love the book even more.<\/p>\n<p>With the release of Ishiguro\u2019s latest novel, <em>Klara and the Sun<\/em>, I\u2019ve been thinking about what I believe the key concern and theme of exploration of Ishiguro\u2019s work is. My initial reaction was to think, &#8216;Well surely it can\u2019t be narrowed to one idea; there\u2019s so much nuance of love, relationships, existentialism, social criticism, pain, joy&#8217; \u2013 and I could easily go on. However, upon thinking about it further, I realised at the core of Ishiguro\u2019s writing lies the question: what makes us human?<\/p>\n<p>So, according to Ishiguro, what does make us human? So far, in <em>Never Let Me Go,<\/em> he has used clones to explore this question, and it appears that <em>Klara and the Sun<\/em> will tackle a whole new point of scientific controversy in the use of artificial intelligence. What\u2019s incredibly powerful though, is that through this absence of \u2018humanness\u2019, Ishiguro is able to truly capture the essence of it. By erasing the biological ties to our identity as \u2018human\u2019, Ishiguro guides us to recognise which parts of us are innate and which are manufactured. Often Ishiguro\u2019s reflections go further than this though, exploring not only on what makes us human, but subsequently what makes us inhuman. In Ishiguro\u2019s crafted world, it is possible for the clone to be as \u2013 if not more \u2013 human, than the people from whom they are cloned. Does Ishiguro suggest then that what makes us human is not our biology, but our capacity for thought and emotion? Or perhaps, what makes us human is our ability to form relationships; to make wrong decisions and face the consequences, to know and feel what it is to lose the people we love.<\/p>\n<p>I feel that Ishiguro\u2019s work is also a particularly poignant read with all that has been going on this past year. In a time where we may feel like zombified \u2013 or even cloned \u2013 copies of our past selves, or where our personas have been digitally translated, it\u2019s easier than ever to empathise with Ishiguro\u2019s somewhat-human, somewhat-liminal, characters. As a first year undergraduate student, whose past year has been spent meeting new people as the digital and lockdown version of myself, I think <em>Never Let Me Go<\/em> (despite its heart wrenching nature) provided me with a sort of hope.
