Professor Jennie Batchelor<\/a>, Professor of Eighteenth-Century Studies in the School of English<\/a>, will host ‘Crafting through COVID: A Virtual Sew Along and Conversation<\/a>‘ with practising embroiderer Alison Larkin at 7pm on Wednesday 16 September 2020.<\/p>\n

‘Crafting Through COVID’ will be a virtual event during which participants are invited to share images and videos of their creative work and experiences of making during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a resurgence in handicrafts as ever more people recognise the health benefits of making. From 2015, when Jennie discovered and published a cache of presumed lost embroidery patterns from the Lady’s Magazine<\/a> (1770-1832), people around the world have been reproducing these beautiful designs.<\/p>\n

Following the publication of Jane Austen Embroidery<\/a> (Pavilion Books, 2020), written by Jennie and Alison Larkin, interest in the patterns has grown and their motifs are finding their way onto a range of modern objects from tote bags to face masks.<\/p>\n

All ‘Crafting through COVID’ participants will receive free instructions for a new project based on a 1798 design featured in the Lady’s Magazine.<\/p>\n
