{"id":3132,"date":"2020-06-27T12:38:36","date_gmt":"2020-06-27T11:38:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/?p=3132"},"modified":"2020-06-27T12:38:36","modified_gmt":"2020-06-27T11:38:36","slug":"david-stirrup-publishes-on-visuality-and-visual-sovereignty-in-contemporary-anishinaabe-literature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/2020\/06\/27\/david-stirrup-publishes-on-visuality-and-visual-sovereignty-in-contemporary-anishinaabe-literature\/","title":{"rendered":"David Stirrup publishes on Visuality and Visual Sovereignty in Contemporary Anishinaabe Literature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/english\/people\/115\/www.kent.ac.uk\/english\/people\/115\/stirrup-david\">Professor David Stirrup<\/a>, Professor of American Literature and Indigenous Studies in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/english\">School of English<\/a>, has recently published a monograph entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/msupress.org\/9781611863529\/picturing-worlds\/\"><em>Picturing Worlds: Visuality and Visual Sovereignty\u00a0in Contemporary Anishinaabe Literature <\/em><\/a>(Michigan State University Press, 2020).<\/p>\n<p>Taking up Lisa Brooks\u2019s notion of \u201cspinning the binary\u201d between oral and literary forms and Christopher Teuton\u2019s explication of the graphic mode, this book examines the uses that a range of Anishinaabe authors make of art and artists. Arguing that the mark on a surface\u2014whether it be an ancient pictograph or a contemporary painting\u2014intervenes, in the works under scrutiny, in such artificial divisions as precolonial\/oral and postcontact\/alphabetically literate societies, the text examines the ways Anishinaabe authors establish frameworks for continuity, resistance, and sovereignty in that \u201cspace\u201d where conventional narratives of settlement read rupture.
