{"id":3076,"date":"2020-06-11T09:38:46","date_gmt":"2020-06-11T08:38:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/?p=3076"},"modified":"2020-06-11T10:28:44","modified_gmt":"2020-06-11T09:28:44","slug":"launch-of-new-reading-series-poetry-from-around-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/2020\/06\/11\/launch-of-new-reading-series-poetry-from-around-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Launch of new reading series: &#8216;Poetry From Around The World&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Betsy Porritt and Winsome Monica Minott, PhD candidates in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/courses\/postgraduate\/235\/poetry-text-practice-research\">Poetry: Text, Practice as Research<\/a>, have launched a new reading series on &#8216;Poetry From Around the World&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The reading group will feature an established write who will share their work alongside four students from the Kent community. The organisers intend to hold 2 events each term. As of October, the series will combine workshops and seminar style poetry sessions with readings from invited speakers. This new series will be a space for students to discuss ideas, ways of reading and forms of writing among established poets and fellow students and Kent staff.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/events\/event\/44463\/poetry-from-around-the-world-major-jackson\">The first session<\/a>, taking place on Thursday 11 June 2020, 3pm-5pm, will feature American professor and poet <a href=\"http:\/\/www.majorjackson.com\/\">Major Jackson<\/a>, who is the author of five collections of poetry: <em>The Absurd Man<\/em> (2020), <em>Roll Deep<\/em> ( 2015), <em>Holding Company<\/em> ( 2010), <em>Hoops<\/em> (2006), which was selected as finalist for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literature-Poetry, and <em>Leaving Saturn<\/em> (2002), which won the Cave Canem Poetry Prize for a first book of poems. Major Jackson has also been awarded a Pushcart Prize, a Whiting Writers\u2019 Award, and has been honoured by the Pew Fellowship in the Arts and the Witter Bynner Foundation in conjunction with the Library of Congress.<\/p>\n<p>All are very welcome to attend.
