{"id":3056,"date":"2020-06-04T10:28:33","date_gmt":"2020-06-04T09:28:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/?p=3056"},"modified":"2020-06-04T10:28:33","modified_gmt":"2020-06-04T09:28:33","slug":"derek-ryan-co-edits-book-on-cross-channel-modernisms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/2020\/06\/04\/derek-ryan-co-edits-book-on-cross-channel-modernisms\/","title":{"rendered":"Derek Ryan co-edits book on &#8216;Cross-Channel Modernisms&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/english\/people\/110\/ryan-derek\">Derek Ryan<\/a>, Senior Lecturer in Modernist Literature in the School of English, has co-edited a new book with Claire Davidson (Universit\u00e9 Sorbonne Nouvelle) and Jane Goldman (University of Glasgow), entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/edinburghuniversitypress.com\/book-cross-channel-modernisms.html\"><em>Cross-Channel Modernisms <\/em><\/a>(Edinburgh University Press, 2020).<\/p>\n<p>The book has been described by Anna Snaith as &#8216;a timely and urgent project&#8217; in the ways in which it &#8216;invites us to think anew about the history of connections between Britain and France&#8217; and &#8216;reconfigures our understanding of transnationalism and translation in the modernist period&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Described by Katherine Mansfield in 1921 as \u2018a great cold sword between you and your dear love Adventure\u2019, in the early twentieth century the English Channel, or &#8216;La Manche&#8217; in French, represented both a political and intellectual barrier between European avant-gardism and British restraint, and a bridge for cultural connection and aesthetic innovation.
