The\u00a0\u20ac3.9 million grant\u00a0was awarded under the\u00a0Horizon 2020<\/a>\u00a0(H2020) Marie Sk\u0142odowska-Curie\u00a0Actions European Joint Doctorates scheme.<\/p>\n

The University\u2019s\u00a0project partners are\u00a0Freie Universit\u00e4t Berlin<\/a>, Prague\u2019s\u00a0Univerzita Karlova<\/a>(Charles University),\u00a0Universit\u00e9 Paul Val\u00e9ry Montpellier 3<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Universidade do Porto<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Kent\u2019s contribution is led by\u00a0Bernhard Klein,\u00a0Professor of English Literature\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0School of English<\/a>\u00a0and Academic Director European Development, and\u00a0Dr Amanda Klekowski von Koppenfels, Senior Lecturer in Migration and Politics, and Academic Director of\u00a0Brussels School of International Studies<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Starting on 1 March 2019, the four-year project, entitled \u2018Migration and Modernity: Historical and Cultural Challenges\u2019, will undertake a comparative study to provide an\u00a0urgently needed\u00a0historical analysis that can address the so-called migration crisis of the present through an understanding of the population movements of the past. It will also seek to place\u00a0contemporary migration in an historical context.<\/p>\n

The consortium has been set up as an\u00a0interdisciplinary collaboration\u00a0between researchers in the Humanities and the Social Sciences who will approach migration as both\u00a0a condition of modernity\u00a0and one of its\u00a0greatest challenges.<\/p>\n

Through an innovative training programme, carried out in conjunction with\u00a018 non-academic partners\u00a0(including NGOs, charities, and the cultural and creative industries), the project will enable a new generation of experts to gain the\u00a0historical knowledge\u00a0required to respond to future migration crises with\u00a0innovative solutions. It will generate new knowledge about the shaping of the modern world and provide\u00a0conceptual tools\u00a0to avoid short-termism in\u00a0migration management\u00a0through its emphasis on enduring cultural patterns, historical context, and migration flows over the long term.<\/p>\n

It is expected that the links between contemporary and historical migration that its research will uncover could help improve\u00a0educational provision,\u00a0inform\u00a0future policy, and\u00a0counter the rise of anti-immigrant sentiment across the EU.<\/p>\n

The project was scored\u00a098\/100\u00a0\u2013 one of the highest ever scores for H2020 funding.<\/p>\n
