Contemporary and immersive, deploying prose rich in image and metaphor, the novel has received effusive reviews in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spectator.co.uk\/2018\/04\/spend-spend-spend-at-the-court-of-philip-iv-of-spain\/\">The Spectator<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/books\/painter-to-the-king-by-amy-sackville-review-dense-and-rich-and-well-worth-reading-1.3456750\">The Irish Times<\/a> and from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2018\/apr\/05\/painter-to-the-king-by-amy-sackville-review-a-virtuoso-portrait-of-velazquez\">Sarah Perry in The Guardian<\/a>, where it was featured as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/series\/bookoftheweek\">book of the week<\/a> earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>As Sarah Perry concludes:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNovels about art and artistry are plentiful; many are very good. But in\u00a0<em>Painter to the King<\/em>\u00a0Sackville has written not only by far the finest novel of its kind that I have ever read, but one of the finest historical novels of recent years.
