{"id":1706,"date":"2018-03-07T12:43:48","date_gmt":"2018-03-07T12:43:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/?p=1706"},"modified":"2018-03-07T12:43:48","modified_gmt":"2018-03-07T12:43:48","slug":"shadow-attorney-general-cites-refugee-tales-as-major-inspiration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/2018\/03\/07\/shadow-attorney-general-cites-refugee-tales-as-major-inspiration\/","title":{"rendered":"Shadow attorney general cites Refugee Tales as major inspiration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">Writing in The Guardian Shami Chakrabarti said she considers Refugee Tales, a book compiled by Professor David Herd from the School of English, as a major work of civil activism.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/files\/2018\/03\/shami-chakrabarti-5x2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1711\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/files\/2018\/03\/shami-chakrabarti-5x2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"709\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/files\/2018\/03\/shami-chakrabarti-5x2.jpg 709w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/files\/2018\/03\/shami-chakrabarti-5x2-300x120.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2018\/mar\/05\/shami-chakrabarti-five-books-to-inspire-activism\">She chose Refugee Tales<\/a>\u00a0with particular relevance to\u00a0the ongoing hunger strike\u00a0taking place at the Yarl\u2019s Wood detention centre.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Speaking of humanity, I write fresh from\u00a0a demoralising visit\u00a0to a place of indefinite incarceration, Yarl\u2019s Wood detention centre,\u2019 she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guardianbookshop.com\/refugee-tales.html\">Refugee Tales<\/a><\/em>, the book produced by the charity Gatwick Detainees Welfare Group, brings together the stories of individuals caught up in the refugee crisis,\u00a0retold by poets and novelists.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018These are presented as modern-day counterparts to the stories in Chaucer\u2019s\u00a0<em>Canterbury Tales<\/em>, re\u2011humanising people our society so often vilifies.\u00a0If ever there were a cause that demanded action, this is surely it.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/refugeetales.org\/\">Refugee Tales<\/a>\u00a0began life in 2015\u00a0with a walk across South East England and a book of poems and stories designed\u00a0to raise the plight of those held in indefinite detention in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>The walk has taken place again in 2016 and 2017 and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/refugeetales.org\/the-walk-of-2018\/\">is planned for July 6 \u2013 11 in 2018<\/a>.
