{"id":1342,"date":"2017-05-15T15:18:26","date_gmt":"2017-05-15T14:18:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/?p=1342"},"modified":"2017-09-20T14:08:23","modified_gmt":"2017-09-20T13:08:23","slug":"award-success-for-student-mental-health-campaigner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/2017\/05\/15\/award-success-for-student-mental-health-campaigner\/","title":{"rendered":"Award success for student mental health campaigner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Second year student Karl Knights recently won the award for Outstanding Contribution to Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity at the Kent Student Awards 2017 for his work on mental health awareness.<\/p>\n<section class=\"content-body\">\n<div class=\"content-container\">\n<div class=\"content-main\">\n<p>Karl, who studies English and American literature in the <u><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">School of English<\/span><\/u>, was recognised for using his own <strong>personal experiences and strong communication skills<\/strong> to bring openness to the issue of mental health.<\/p>\n<p>Karl has already written on this topic for <strong>a wide range of national media outlets<\/strong>, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/author\/karl-knights\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">The Huffington Post<\/span><\/u><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2016\/jun\/01\/suicidal-detained-safety-mental-health-therapy\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">the Guardian<\/span><\/u><\/a> and works as a press ambassador for Mind, Student Minds, SANE and Time to Change and Rethink Mental Illness.<\/p>\n<p>He has also been actively engaged in working with others at the university to further raise awareness on this issue and is <strong>in training to run the Brighton Marathon in 2018<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/uk.virginmoneygiving.com\/fundraiser-web\/fundraiser\/showFundraiserProfilePage.action?userUrl=KarlKnights\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">and raise \u00a31,000 for Mind<\/span><\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>His award was issued on the eve of Mental Health Awareness Week 2017, which runs from 8-14 May.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the event, four students from the students from the School of Engineering and Digital Arts produced a video animation for the BBC that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/news\/kentlife\/13496\/students-work-with-bbc-to-produce-animation-for-mental-health-awareness-week\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">documented the issue of mental health treatment and the problems that exist as experienced by a patient named Sophie<\/span><\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This video was <strong>watched hundreds of thousands of times online<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/news\/kentlife\/13579\/video-by-kent-students-on-mental-health-failings-leads-to-nhs-trust-apology\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">led to an apology from the NHS CEO of Kent and Medway Partnership Trust after she saw the video<\/span><\/u><\/a>.
