This is the fourth collection of poetry by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/english\/staff\/herd.html\"><u>Professor David Herd<\/u><\/a> (Professor of Modern Literature and Head of the School of English), his other collections including <em>All Just<\/em> (Carcanet 2012) and <em>Outwith<\/em> (Bookthug 2012). As the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/wp-admin\/(Professor%20of%20Modern%20Poetry%20and%20Head%20of%20the%20School%20of%20English)\"><u>Sunday Herald<\/u><\/a> put it:<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The English will soon be living in a cultural and economic Appalachia of their own devising, and I sincerely hope they will like it. David Herd\u2019s <em>Through<\/em> (Carcanet) is that very rare book, violently political and artistic, especially in the light of Brexit. Set in and around an immigration hearing, the narrator comes to understand that what the state wants for every refugee from persecution and genocide is that he die on the street, \u201cLeaving the language unaffected by the process of expulsion\u201d; or, to be corralled in some eternal holding pen. \u201cImagine having that dream. You\u2019d have to have a mind of winter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David Herd\u2019s recent writings on the politics of human movement have appeared in the <em>Times Literary Supplement<\/em>, <em>Los Angeles Review of Books<\/em>, <em>Parallax<\/em> and <em>Almost Island<\/em>. He is also the co-organiser of the project <a href=\"http:\/\/refugeetales.org\/\"><u>Refugee Tales<\/u><\/a>, now in its third year.
