{"id":1096,"date":"2016-10-06T17:06:39","date_gmt":"2016-10-06T16:06:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/?p=1096"},"modified":"2017-04-20T12:31:30","modified_gmt":"2017-04-20T11:31:30","slug":"1096","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/english-news\/2016\/10\/06\/1096\/","title":{"rendered":"Patricia Debney to launch poetry collection at Kent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/english\/staff\/debney.html\">Patricia Debney<\/a> (Reader in Creative Writing in the School of English) will be launching her recently published collection of poetry, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cinnamonpress.com\/index.php\/hikashop-menu-for-products-listing\/poetry\/product\/200-baby-patricia-debney\"><em>Baby<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>(Cinnamon Press, 2016) at the Creative Writing Reading Series on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/english\/creativewriting\/events.html\">Tuesday 11 October<\/a>. This latest collection looks back at &#8216;a dysfunctional childhood and a mother who lived a life always on the verge of destruction&#8217;. The collection is, ultimately, a celebration of love and family. The poet Jane Monson said of the publication:<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;A compelling third collection, Baby is as quick to illuminate as it is to enshadow. Debney&#8217;s unique organisation of fragments, prose poetry and white space, mirrors with a precise and unflinching hand the stuff of life at its most human; that which stays, returns and then vanishes.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Patricia Debney\u2019s other publications include <em>Gestation<\/em> (Shearsman Chapbooks, 2014) and a collection of prose poems, <em>Littoral<\/em> (Shearsman Books, 2013). Her first collection, <em>How to Be a Dragonfly <\/em>(Smith Doorstop Books), won the 2004 Poetry Business Book &amp; Pamphlet Competition.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/english\/creativewriting\/events.html\">Creative Writing Reading Series<\/a> is open to students, staff and members of the public and takes place every Tuesday during term time in the Keynes Senior Common Room from 6pm. A donation of \u00a32 is encouraged.
