Here are a few highlights:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Film rights sold to recent graduate\u2019s first novel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">School of English alumna <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emmiitaranta.com\/\">Emmi It\u00e4ranta<\/a> <\/strong>has sold the film rights to her first novel <em>Memory of Water<\/em> to the production company Bufo. Emmi began writing the novel whilst studying for an MA in Creative Writing at Kent before going on to secure a publishing deal with Harper Collins.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Kent Union Teaching Awards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">This year\u2019s award for Best Postgraduate Teacher went to School of English Assistant Lecturer and PhD student <strong>Michael Falk<\/strong>. This is a fantastic achievement, not least because Michael is still only in his first year of teaching.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Publishing successes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Gonzalo Ceron Garcia<\/strong>, a recent PhD student in the School, has just secured a contract for his novel <em>We Are the End<\/em> with noted publishers Galley Beggar Press. The novel will be out in 2017.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>New publishing deal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Mike Stoner was awarded an MA in Creative Writing at Kent in 2011. Before finding a publisher, his self-published version of <em>JALAN JALAN<\/em> was awarded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2014\/dec\/03\/self-published-book-of-the-month-jalan-jalan-mike-stoner\">The Guardian&#8217;s Self-published Book of the Month<\/a> in 2014. <em>JALAN JALAN<\/em>, his first novel, has just been published by Tuttle Publishing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Student commended at the National Poetry Competition 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Congratulations to Howard Laughton who was commended at this year\u2019s National Poetry Competition for his poem \u2018Six Easy Calculations\u2019. Howard is currently studying for an MA in Creative Writing and wrote the poem as part of a poetry module. The National Poetry Competition Awards Ceremony was held at the Savile Club, London, 31 March 2016. You can read Howard\u2019s poem on <a href=\"http:\/\/poems.poetrysociety.org.uk\/poems\/six-easy-calculations\/\">The Poetry Society website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Leverhulme Research Fellowship<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/english\/staff\/batchelor.html\">Dr Jennie Batchelor<\/a> has received a new Leverhulme Research Fellowship to enable her to undertake further work on \u201cThe Lady&#8217;s Magazine in Romantic Print Culture\u201d.
