On 7th May 2025, the School of Engineering hosted an interactive exhibition of third-year student projects. It was an impressive display featuring a range of creative and complex projects, with industry experts engaging with the projects and third-year students. It was a buzzing and busy atmosphere, with the palpable pride of academic staff and technical specialists evident in every interaction. Congratulations to all of our third year students!\u00a0<\/p>\n
We caught up with a few third year students to hear about their projects – and their time at Kent!<\/p>\n
Tom Gregory, third-year Mechanical Engineering student:<\/strong><\/p>\n What made you choose Kent to study?<\/b>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n I chose Kent in Covid.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>So I didn’t actually get to come here [in-person], but I looked online.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Also, a couple of my brother’s mates came here and they said it was brilliant.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>A suggestion from a friend is worth everything.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n What has been your favourite thing about studying Engineering at Kent?<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n Probably the projects, the projects have been challenging but they’ve been quite fun.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>And you usually learn new things through them that you wouldn’t necessarily learn anywhere else.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Like I would never learn what I’ve been doing just in my own research.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>So, learning new things through projects.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Do you have a favourite module?<\/b>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n I have a favourite module, probably Material Science was one I thought I wasn’t going to enjoy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>But I ended up really enjoying sort of how materials change with heat and pressure and things like that. <\/span>I thought it was really cool.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n What advice would you give someone looking to study Engineering at Kent?<\/b>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n Go to lectures, they’re usually actually very useful.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>You always say to yourself, oh I’ll just catch up online.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>You never get the full experience if you’re just half watching a lecture. <\/span>So participate fully in the course – get involved.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n What are your career aspirations or next steps after University?<\/b>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n I’ve been lucky enough to be invited back for my placement at BA systems. <\/span>So I’ll be going back there in September, which is quite nice.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n That’s great, BA systems – what do they do?<\/b>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n They do everything, pretty much.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I’ll be doing radar there, which is quite fun.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n What’s the new job title?<\/b>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n It will be Systems Engineer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n What three words would you use to describe your experience of being at Kent?<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n Busy, enjoyable and interesting.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Lase Adeyemi, third-year Mechanical Engineering student:<\/strong><\/p>\n What made you choose Kent to study?<\/b>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n It was a last-minute decision, but I ended up picking it in the end because it was close to home and I liked the convenience of being able to travel back and forth.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n What have been your favourite things about studying Engineering at Kent?<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n Mainly just working in the lab, the mechanical lab, because I did a lot of compression testing with the hydraulic presses.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>3D printing is also really amazing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>As Engineering students, we also have access to the Computing Hackspace. It’s really cool to see all that equipment in action.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Favourite module or lecturer?<\/b>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n This year, my favourite module has been thermodynamics because it’s a really interesting topic and it’s so fun to learn about.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/b>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n What advice would you give someone looking to study Engineering at Kent?<\/b>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n You should be confident in your Maths skills because Engineering is a lot of Maths.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>But also I’d say: don’t be scared to branch out to other aspects of Engineering because here the three main courses are biomedical, electronic and mechanical.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>But just because you’re in those categories doesn’t mean you can’t split them down even further and find your niche.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n What are your career aspirations, or next steps?<\/b>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n I did a placement year at Nissan. It was really fun and it really makes me want to go back into the automotive industry because it was just really cool.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n What three words would you use to describe your experience of being at Kent?<\/b>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n Fun, interesting, life-changing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
