{"id":1313,"date":"2019-02-07T14:36:56","date_gmt":"2019-02-07T14:36:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/eda-news\/?p=1313"},"modified":"2019-02-07T14:36:56","modified_gmt":"2019-02-07T14:36:56","slug":"intelligent-systems-research-creates-smart-wheelchairs-using-artificial-intelligence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/engineering-news\/2019\/02\/07\/intelligent-systems-research-creates-smart-wheelchairs-using-artificial-intelligence\/","title":{"rendered":"Intelligent systems research creates smart wheelchairs using artificial intelligence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Research being carried out by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/engineering-digital-arts\/people\/731\/sirlantzis-konstantinos\"> Dr Konstantinos Sirlantzis<\/a>, Senior Lecturer in Intelligent Systems in the School of Engineering and Digital Arts at the University of Kent is helping to create smart wheelchairs that could help improve people&#8217;s independence and quality of life.<\/p>\n<p>Working on a high-tech project called Assistive Devices for empowering Disabled People through robotic Technologies (ADAPT), the project\u00a0involves smart wheelchairs that can detect movement and watch for obstacles, helping to improve people\u2019s lives in the future.<\/p>\n<p>ADAPT, which is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the University of Kent, has recruited 10 people with disabilities through a nearby hospital\u2019s neurorehabilitation unit, which focuses on individuals who\u2019ve suffered from brain injuries and strokes.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Sirlantzis is taking a modular-focused approach for ADAPT with his team combining AI and sensing technology to achieve collaborative control of the wheelchairs and conduct assessments of the emotional and physiological state of users.<\/p>\n<p>These smart wheelchairs leverage AI to learn users\u2019 movement preferences, style of driving, and their current physiology.
