James Cugley, who is studying electronic engineering, has won through to the final six in the young innovator category of the UK Energy Innovation Awards 2019.
James, who is a PhD candidate within the University’s School of Engineering and Digital Arts, has been shortlisted because of his development of an innovative system for monitoring burner flames and predicting emissions from fossil fuel-fired boilers using digital imaging, spectrometric, and soft-computing techniques.
The judges in the competition were moved to shortlist James after reading that his new system ‘incorporates the latest digital imaging and spectroscopic sensors and embedded computing algorithms to obtain the critical information of the flame and burner conditions such as temperature fluctuation, oscillation frequency, radical intensity and flame stability’.
The Young Innovator of the Year category is one of twelve included in the UK Energy Innovation Awards 2019, with the winner due to be announced in September.
