Third-Year Project Showcase with Industry Experts

On 7th May 2025, the School of Engineering hosted an interactive exhibition of third-year student projects. It was an impressive display featuring a range of creative and complex projects, with industry experts engaging with the projects and third-year students. It was a buzzing and busy atmosphere, with the palpable pride of academic staff and technical specialists evident in every interaction. Congratulations to all of our third year students!

We caught up with a few third year students to hear about their projects – and their time at Kent!

Tom Gregory, third-year Mechanical Engineering student:

What made you choose Kent to study?

I chose Kent in Covid. So I didn’t actually get to come here [in-person], but I looked online. Also, a couple of my brother’s mates came here and they said it was brilliant. A suggestion from a friend is worth everything.

What has been your favourite thing about studying Engineering at Kent?

Probably the projects, the projects have been challenging but they’ve been quite fun. And you usually learn new things through them that you wouldn’t necessarily learn anywhere else. Like I would never learn what I’ve been doing just in my own research. So, learning new things through projects.

Do you have a favourite module?

I have a favourite module, probably Material Science was one I thought I wasn’t going to enjoy. But I ended up really enjoying sort of how materials change with heat and pressure and things like that. I thought it was really cool.

What advice would you give someone looking to study Engineering at Kent?

Go to lectures, they’re usually actually very useful. You always say to yourself, oh I’ll just catch up online. You never get the full experience if you’re just half watching a lecture. So participate fully in the course – get involved.

What are your career aspirations or next steps after University?

I’ve been lucky enough to be invited back for my placement at BA systems. So I’ll be going back there in September, which is quite nice.

That’s great, BA systems – what do they do?

They do everything, pretty much. I’ll be doing radar there, which is quite fun.

What’s the new job title?

It will be Systems Engineer.

What three words would you use to describe your experience of being at Kent?

Busy, enjoyable and interesting.

Lase Adeyemi, third-year Mechanical Engineering student:

What made you choose Kent to study?

It was a last-minute decision, but I ended up picking it in the end because it was close to home and I liked the convenience of being able to travel back and forth.

What have been your favourite things about studying Engineering at Kent?

Mainly just working in the lab, the mechanical lab, because I did a lot of compression testing with the hydraulic presses. 3D printing is also really amazing. As Engineering students, we also have access to the Computing Hackspace. It’s really cool to see all that equipment in action.

Favourite module or lecturer?

This year, my favourite module has been thermodynamics because it’s a really interesting topic and it’s so fun to learn about.

What advice would you give someone looking to study Engineering at Kent?

You should be confident in your Maths skills because Engineering is a lot of Maths. But also I’d say: don’t be scared to branch out to other aspects of Engineering because here the three main courses are biomedical, electronic and mechanical. But just because you’re in those categories doesn’t mean you can’t split them down even further and find your niche.

What are your career aspirations, or next steps?

I did a placement year at Nissan. It was really fun and it really makes me want to go back into the automotive industry because it was just really cool.

What three words would you use to describe your experience of being at Kent?

Fun, interesting, life-changing.
