Congratulations to Professor Yong Yan (principal investigator) together with Dr Lijuan Wang (co-investigator) from the School of Engineering and Digital Arts upon the award from the Industrial Strategy Fund for a project entitled ‘Quality identification and density measurement of waste plastic bales through capacitive sensing and soft computing’. Under the auspices of the UK’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, this project is formulated to address two of the four Grand Challenges, Clean Growth and Artificial Intelligence. The project, funded by Kent Innovation and Enterprise, aims to develop an innovative solution to the automated identification and quantification of materials in waste plastic bales. The solution is based on novel sensor design and machine learning algorithms. The outcome arising from this project is expected to support the waste management industry in the UK and the rest of the world.
