Why study Mechanical Engineering at Kent?

In the UK alone, estimates suggest that 1.8 million new engineers and technicians are needed by 2025 (IMechEe). Designed in response to the growing demand in the UK for graduates with STEM skills such as robotics, driverless vehicles and renewal energy systems, the University of Kent’s Mechanical Engineering degree enables you need to make your mark in this exciting field.

Engineering has shaped modern society, our professional and personal lives in ways that no other discipline has. As a Mechanical Engineer, you get the chance to improve lives, e.g. develop cars that are more fuel efficient/greener/safer, create prosthetic hands that allow a person to type and write, produce hypoallergenic air conditioning for hospital operation rooms, help the world’s population to access clean drinking water, and research and develop life-saving medical equipment to help premature babies. From aerospace to energy, many sectors welcome mechanical engineering graduates with open arms.

Mechanical engineering covers the design and the development of mechanical systems that are vital in many tech industries.  At Kent, we focus on the modern applications of mechanical engineering including:

  • robotics
  • assistive technology
  • smart materials
  • autonomous vehicles

Our course provides a solid grounding in:

  • statics and dynamics
  • properties of materials
  • fluid mechanics
  • thermodynamics
  • mechatronics
  • control
  • instrumentation
  • mathematics
  • electronics
  • programming

Students also work on a variety of hands-on projects combining mechanical design and control systems, supervised by specialist academics.

Careers

There is a focus on employability and career development including industrial interaction and placement opportunities. You can choose to spend a Year In Industry with organisations such as: Airbus, BAE Systems, Delphi Technologies, Jaguar Landrover, Leonardo and Roche Diagnostics.

Mechanical Engineers find employment in a huge range of sectors including:

  • aerospace
  • automotive
  • construction
  • energy
  • manufacturing
  • medical engineering
  • process and control process
  • sports engineering
  • transport, including road and railways

Mechanical engineering skills are highly valued in society.  You can earn a good salary too – find out what graduates earn here.

Staff

Our academic professionals involved in the University of Kent’s exciting new programme include: Dr Mahmood Shafiee, Dr Gianluca Marcelli, Dr Amir Hosein Sakhaei, Dr Kostas Sirtlantzis, Dr Xinggang Yan and Dr Gary Lu.

Practical teaching also forms an essential part of the degree, and this is supported by our workshop specialist technical team.

Professional recognition

Our Mechanical Engineering programme has been designed to satisfy the Institution of Mechanical Engineering’s accreditation requirements and accreditation will be sought. This will complement the existing accreditation of our BEng and MEng courses in Electronic and Communications Engineering by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), which enables fast-track career progression as a professional engineer.

A number of modules offered in our Mechanical Engineering degree course have already been accredited by the IET.
