Communications Research Group visit to China, May 2019

The School of Engineering and Digital Arts’ Communications Research Group has just returned to the UK following an academic visit to China, which included the following locations:

Visit to Purple Mountain Labs, Nanjing

Professor Jiangzhou Wang, Professor Nathan Gomes and Dr Huiling Zhu visited Purple Mountain Labs, a new technology institute associated with Southeast University, China, for research and development in mobile, security and internet communications. It has received 10 Billion CNY (approx. £1.2 billion) investment from the local government for a new building, state-of-the-art equipment, and showcase and demonstration facilities.  Professor J Wang is a Visiting Professor at Southeast University.

Drone-based emergency communications project demonstration, Suzhou

Professor Wang, Dr Zhu and Professor Gomes attended a demonstration of a drone-based emergency communication system as part of a project with which they are associated involving a consortium of Chinese partners, led by Xidian University, China and funded by the Chinese government.

Future Wireless Communication Technology Forum, Nantong

Professor Wang was the principal coordinator and Chair of the Future Wireless Communication Technology Forum, which had as its theme the Future Mobile Internet, hosted by the School of Information Science and Technology at Nantong University.  The eight speakers were from Europe, North America and Asia.  Professor Gomes gave a presentation entitled “Making Fronthaul Work for 5G and Beyond Mobile Networks”.

IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) 2019, Shanghai

Professor J Wang was the Technical Program Chair for ICC 2019, one of the IEEE Communications Society’s flagship conferences.  The conference attracted over 2,500 paper submissions and a similar number of attendees.  Dr Zhu was the Keynote Chair, hosting eminent industry and academic speakers from Asia, North America and Europe.  Dr Zhu was also a technical program committee chair for one of the workshops at ICC, on 5G Trials, organised by the 5G-DRIVE EU-China project.   Professor Gomes presented a paper on Testbed Verification of New Fronthaul Technology for 5G Systems at this workshop.
