Congratulations to Professor Steven Gao, Dr Chao Wang and Dr Benito Sanz upon successful EPSRC funding award

Congratulations to Professor Steven Gao, Dr Chao Wang and Dr Benito Sanz Izquierdo from the School of Engineering and Digital Arts who have successfully been awarded an EPSRC research grant entitled “Low-Profile Ultra-Wideband Wide-Scanning Multi-Function Beam-Steerable Array Antennas” with an FEC value of £787,668.

This interdisciplinary research project is aimed at developing a new generation of low-profile ultra-wideband wide-scanning phased array antennas at RF, microwave & mm-wave frequencies. Such a wideband phased array antenna is a key technology for advanced wireless systems including 5G and future generations of mobile communications, broadband satellite communications, inter-satellite links, radars, sensors and navigation systems and Internet of Things. The project will combine complementary expertise of smart antennas, photonics and 3D printing within the Communications Group in EDA.

It is pleasing to note that the research application was rated as 6/6 by all reviewers who unanimously commented on the outstanding research track records of the applicants and the highly innovative methods outlined. The proposal was also ranked first amongst all proposals submitted to this particular EPSRC Call.

Professor Gao commented “We are delighted to win this research grant from the EPSRC.  EPSRC grant applications are highly competitive and we are grateful for the strong support from industry including Airbus, SSTL, Dstl, Huawei (UK), Keysight Technologies, Rohde Schwarz, JDC Ltd, YOFC Ltd, CPI, and PEL Ltd.  EDA has a reputation internationally in the research fields of antennas, microwave engineering, photonics and wireless communications and we look forward to working on this very challenging research project”.
