Professor Steven Gao from the School of Engineering and Digital Arts (EDA) collaborated with Huawei Technologies Ltd on a research project on “Adaptive multi-band antennas for smart phones” during the period 2015 to 2018. PhD student, Mr Hang Xu, worked on the project, and Dr. Hanyang Wang and Dr. Hai Zhou were the co-supervisors from Huawei. The project has been very successful, leading to several innovative antenna design techniques, for example, a multi-mode decoupling technique has been developed and this work has been published in the Special Issue on “Antennas and Propagation of 5G Communications” in IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation .
Another new technique of designing Compact and Low Profile Loop Antenna with Six Resonant Modes for LTE Smart phone has also been published in IEEE. Indeed, the successful completion of this project led to another new fully-funded PhD studentship award of £105,000 from Huawei recently. The new project will investigate novel theory and techniques of millimeter-wave antenna designs for 5G smart phones. The PhD studentship opportunity is located here, with a closing date of 5th September 2018.
Huawei is one of the largest manufacturers of smart phones in the world. Successful collaborations with leading industries such as Huawei will enable researchers from EDA to produce more research impacts on the society.
