Research Seminar – ‘Laying the Foundations for Millimetre-Wave Cellular Networks: Channel Characteristics and Modelling’ on Tues 1 May at 1 pm in JLT

The School of Engineering and Digital Arts’ next Research Seminar entitled ‘Laying the Foundations for Millimetre-Wave Cellular Networks: Channel Characteristics and Modelling’ will be delivered by Dr Simon L Cotton from Queen’s University Belfast and will take place on Tuesday 1st May from 1 pm to 2 pm in Jennison Lecture Theatre (JLT).

The talk will introduce some of the challenges and opportunities associated with mmWave UE-to-infrastructure and mmWave UE-to-UE (i.e. device-to-device) communications. A particular emphasis will be placed on highlighting the more challenging channel conditions which can arise in these applications due to the sensitivity of mmWave communications to shadowing and blocking compared to communications at conventional microwave frequencies. The importance of characterising these effects with the correct statistical models when incorporating them into stochastic geometry analysis will be highlighted. In the context of device-to-device communications, the need for user incentivisation and cooperation will also briefly be discussed.
