The Women in Research, Engineering and Design (WiRED) event, at Kent’s Canterbury campus saw 21 female primary school pupils from Year 6 participating in a number of engineering and digital technology-focussed sessions. These included: hands on experience of printed wireless electronics made with conducting inks and learning about Radio Frequency Identification tags, making tiny toothbrush robots (Bristlebots) using a toothbrush head, a motor and a batter, meeting Edison a NAO Robot responding to voice control commands and watching Edison perform various activities including push ups, ‘Meet the Scientists’, an interative challenge to learn about famous female scientists, and producing special visual effects in EDA’s green screen studio.
The WiRED event was hosted by the University’s School of Engineering and Digital Arts (EDA).
The schools involved were: The Canterbury Primary School, Pilgrims Way School, Canterbury and St Peter’s Methodist Primary School, Canterbury.
