Congratulations to Professor Steven Gao from the School of Engineering and Digital Arts who has just been awarded a research grant totalling 371,533 Euros funded by the European Union FP7 Space Call programme, and entitled “GaN powered Ka-band high-efficiency multi-beam transceivers for SATellites’ (GaNSat). The project aims to develop the first GaN-based millimeter-wave active phased array antennas for satellite communications and space communications, in collaboration with Astrium Satellites (France), Evoleo Technologies (Portugal), Ferdinand-Braun-Institute (Germany), Institute de Telecomunications (Portugal), MIER (Spain) and Efacec (Portugal). The research proposal was evaluated by EC reviewers and received the highest score possible for the proposal, a full 15 out of 15. Steven commented: ‘This is a great news. It demonstrates the strength of EDA in space antennas, phased arrays and satellite communications.’
