Joint Winner of the University of Kent Business : Academic Collaboration of the Year 2011 Award

John Batchelor and Winston Waller from the School of Engineering and Digital Arts (EDA) have won the University of Kent Business : Academic Collaboration of the Year 2011 Award for their collaborative project with Martec Ltd, Whitstable, Kent, to develop a pin-less connector.
Martec specialise in the design and manufacture of hermetically sealed electrical connectors for hostile environments. They approached EDA for assistance having seen reports of the School’s Antenna research. A bid for a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) was successful, and Michael Wisdom, who had worked previously in EDA, started on the project in March 2009. After two years a successful outcome was achieved – a working prototype was produced and Michael joined the Company to progress the new device into production and develop new products using the technology. In addition to successfully implementing a pin-less connector, the project also generated a raft of new applications using this technology, providing Martec with opportunities for future development and expansion.
The award was shared with a project from the Computing Laboratory.
