Guitar-Playing Robot Entertains and Inspires

The School of Engineering and Digital Arts was delighted to welcome Dr. Nai-One Lai from Goldman Sachs and Dr. Heico Sandee, Robotics Project Manager, Eindhoven University of Technology, on 6th April, 2010. Nai-One, who has a PhD in Control Engineering, is the School’s Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Teaching Fellow and it was through this scheme that they made their joint presentation – Nai-One on project management and career paths and Heico on the development of a complex robot, with his guitar-playing robot as a “live” example. Key in the development of high-tech robots is the close collaboration between disciplines and the ability to work together – which certainly struck a chord with EDA’s students who have a group robotic project in their first year.
Alex Savage, whose Stage 3 modules include “Digital Control and Robotics”, said “we all find it very inspiring to experience what can be done with the knowledge acquired from your time at university”.
The morning was an excellent example of how industrial engineers at the cutting edge of current developments can be brought together to motivate and inspire the next generation of engineers through demonstrating their current projects and sharing their experience of how their group project work at University helped them in their roles in the workplace.
