{"id":250,"date":"2017-10-24T15:57:29","date_gmt":"2017-10-24T14:57:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/employabilitypoints\/?p=250"},"modified":"2017-10-25T12:46:04","modified_gmt":"2017-10-25T11:46:04","slug":"the-ep-scheme-for-history-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/employabilitypoints\/2017\/10\/24\/the-ep-scheme-for-history-students\/","title":{"rendered":"The EP Scheme for History Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Don&#8217;t miss the history in its making &#8211; become an intern whilst studying History!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Employability Points (EP) Scheme actively encourages students to engage with co-curricular activities and as a History student, there are countless ways to get involved!<\/p>\n<p>For example, there are various volunteering opportunities with local museums and heritage organisations, including Canterbury Cathedral and Royal Engineers Museum.<\/p>\n<p>The School of History has also provided the chance for students to get involved in project work, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/ww1\/\">Gateways to the First World War initiative<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Also, through Kent Union, students can join the History society (for free), sign-up to be a course or school rep, and partake in the KSCV Award.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, you can cash-in your hard earned Employability Points on rewards later this academic year! We already have some amazing heritage opportunities confirmed!<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, we have the <strong>Royal Engineers Museum<\/strong>; Kent\u2019s largest military museum, who are offering three work experience placements in Collections and Archives (150 points), as well as an exclusive tour of the collection, which will include a chance to handle rare and unique items (75 points).<\/p>\n<p>In addition, we also have\u00a0the<strong> Historic Dockyard Chatham\u00a0and\u00a0Canterbury Cathedral\u00a0<\/strong>offering a variety of opportunities, including a work placements in their Collections teams (150 points).<\/p>\n<p>Of course, a History degree does not necessarily mean a career in heritage; famous history graduates include journalist Louis Theroux, comedian Sacha Baron Cohen and previous cabinet members Gordon Brown, John Prescott and David Blunkett. With that in mind, the buzz word \u2018transferable skills\u2019 is very much applicable to students on history!<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, it is important to note that the EP scheme is also providing research placements with organisations such as <strong>DSTL <\/strong>and <strong>Sustainability Monitor<\/strong>, creative opportunities with <strong>Nucleus Arts <\/strong>and <strong>Lilford Framers <\/strong>as well as opportunities in local government via <strong>Medway Council, Tunbridge Wells Borough Council <\/strong>and <strong>Canterbury City Council<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, School of History student, Chris Day, interned with Medway Council, via EP, in 2016-17 \u2013 check out the case study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/employabilitypoints\/reward-cases\/medway-council-17.html\">here<\/a>. Furthermore, another History student undertook an amazing account management internship with <strong>Reflect Digital, <\/strong>a local digital marketing agency!
