Handelsbanken, a local relationship bank, have been supporting University of Kent students through the EP Scheme since 2014. For the 2018-19 academic year, the bank provided one student, Daniel Bezuidenhout (School of Economics), the chance to undertake a 1-week work experience placement.
The EP team caught-up with Daniel and Andy Davies, Branch Manager, to find out more.
Daniel reflected that he gained this EP reward due to undertaking a range of co-curricular activities; he undertook various part-time jobs, was a proactive member of Kent Invest and dedicated a substantial amount of time towards sports teams.
As a result, he applied for the Handelsbanken reward as he had a strong interest in the banking sector, whereas he was intrigued by the business’ personal approach towards working with clients.
During his 1-week placement, Daniel gained a comprehensive insight into banking; he was able to spend time with various members of staff, learning about banking terminology and processes. As a result, he was able to see how the business functions and its approach towards working with clients.
Daniel was also tasked with reviewing a selection of case studies to determine whether the bank would grant mortgages and even a £2.6 million loan. This allowed him to put this knowledge into practice and gain an appreciation of the day-to-day activities of banking staff.
Beyond this, Daniel has had the chance to attend a new customer meeting, in addition to shadowing a meeting with a local legal firm, who are looking to utilise Handelsbanken’s online banking service.
Andy Davies, Branch Manager, commented:
“Daniel is inquisitive, interested and engaged…the placement has provided Daniel with opportunities to develop knowledge and an understanding of banking terminology. We make sure that this reward is both enjoyable, useful and allows students to achieve what they need.”
Daniel also commented on how impactful the experience has been and as result, it has reaffirmed his intention to work in the banking sector following the completion of his degree.
