John spoke to Gary, Reflect Digital’s Paid Media Director and Matt’s line manager at Reflect Digital, to see how the Mathew’s internship has been going.

How’s it been going?

Matt has been great. He has passed each of the training and has been working really well within the team. He’s been asking to do more too which has been really encouraging.

So what has Matt been doing with you?

Matt has been doing a lot of training before we got him to start working on the paid media side properly. He did Google Certifications as well as other training to make sure he was up to speed with how we work, especially before getting into working with fully in our paid media team. He also worked within other teams before settling within our team – he worked in the SEO team as well as human behaviour briefly. We has been shadowing our team and learning from them. He has been a lot of data analytics and looking at trends so we can best serve our clients. While it is tedious, it’s really useful to track analytics and trends in paid media and is a good basis to understand paid media and everybody who has worked here has done this. He’s also been asking to do more too, so we’ve been giving him additional work where we can.

You’ve had EP Students in the past, how have you found working with our students?

Yeah, we been supporting the scheme for a good few years. Typically they’ve been really good and we’ve offered them roles at the end of their internship with us. Last year we had Amelia, who’s still with us, Pranati, who went back to finish her degree, and Fiona. They’ve been really useful too because of the school holidays and they fill the gaps when staff are on annual leave.

What advice would you give an EP student who wants to apply for a paid media role?

My main piece of advice is to understand what is involved with paid media. It’s not just content creation, but is similar to data analysis and I’ve had people in interviews talk about being creative and the role isn’t entirely that. There is a lot of looking at data and planning an approach from there.
