A Freshers’ Guide to Employability Points!

So, you have made it to University, picked up your key, moved your belongings into your accommodation, registered in the Sports Hall, collected you student card, met your flat mates… but now what?

Here are a few hints and tips from the EP Team.

1. Societies

You will need to go to Freshers Fayre. There are over 200 Societies at Kent and over 50 Sports teams. On Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd September, the Fayre is held outside Eliot College and it’s a unique chance to chat to the committee members of the many sports and societies all in one place.

There is something for everyone there, varying from special interest groups like cooking and cartoons, to academic and political groups. New societies are formed every year which is what makes the University so exciting to be part of!

2. Volunteering

How about taking part in some volunteering? Kent Union encourage students to learn new skills and boost their CV through a diverse range of volunteering opportunities.

You can also join the student Raise and Give Society (RAG) and, as well as meeting new friends and learning new skills, you can really make a difference to the local community.

3. Part-Time Work

We all know student budgets are tight. If you are interested in part-time work while studying, check out Kent Union’s Jobshop for opportunities as they come up. You can hone your skills and earn money while doing so.

Understandably, during the first week of your first year at university, employability schemes are not necessarily at the top of your agenda. However, you might not realise that taking part in any of the activities that I outlined above, earns you Employability Points!

We firmly believe that increasing your employability should also be fun and you would be surprised at the skills you pick up while taking part in the above activities.

For more information on how many points you can bank for certain activities please see here. Once you have gained these points, you are well on your way to claiming a Reward.
