The research of University of Kent Economist, Dr Christian Siegel<\/a> and Zs\u00f3fia L. B\u00e1r\u00e1ny of the Central European University, Viena have been cited in the 2024 Economic Report of the President<\/a>. <\/strong>The Report, an annual communication between the White House and the US Congress, presents an overview of the nation\u2019s economic progress and makes the case for the Biden-Harris Administration\u2019s economic policy priorities.<\/p>\n

‘The topics covered in this year\u2019s report include: The Benefits of Full Employment<\/em><\/a>; <\/em>The Year in Review and the Years Ahead<\/em><\/a>; <\/em>Population, Aging, and the Economy<\/em><\/a>; <\/em>Increasing the Supply of Affordable Housing<\/em><\/a>; <\/em>International Trade and Investment Flows<\/em><\/a>; <\/em>Accelerating the Clean Energy Transition<\/em><\/a>; <\/em>and An Economic Framework for Understanding Artificial Intelligence<\/em><\/a>.’\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The report to Congress cites B\u00e1r\u00e1ny and Siegel (2018) ‘Job Polarization and Structural Change’ (published in the American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics, vol. 10, no. 1, January 2018 and is available here<\/a>).\u00a0 B\u00e1r\u00e1ny and Siegel\u2019s paper focuses on the disturbance in the distribution of wages and employment across society that occurred during the 1980s in response to the structural changes that saw the rise of the service sector and the decline in manufacturing. The White House report draws parallels to that historical process to lend support for their interpretation of changes in the wage distribution and job opportunities seen in the contemporary US labour market and claims that similar processes are being driven now by increasing automation and the embryonic adoption of AI.<\/p>\n
