Join us for these stimulating in-person sessions hosted by the Development Economics Research Centre at Kent<\/a>\u00a0on our Canterbury campus.<\/p>\n Speaker: Professor Stefan Dercon,\u00a0 “Gambling on Development”.<\/strong><\/p>\n Stefan Dercon is Professor of Economic Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government and the Economics Department of the University of Oxford. He is also the Director of the Centre for the Study of African Economies at Oxford. He combines his academic career with work as a policy advisor. Between 2011 and 2017, he was Chief Economist of the UK Department of International Development (DFID). Between 2020-2022, he was the Development Policy Advisor to successive Foreign Secretaries at the UK\u2019s Foreign Ministry (FCDO).<\/p>\n His research interests concern what keeps some people and countries poor: the failures of markets, governments and politics, mainly in Africa and South Asia, and how to achieve change.<\/p>\n His latest book \u201cGambling on Development: why some countries win and others lose\u201d was published in 2022.
